St Joan 2015

By Julia Pascal

"Challenging", "erudite", "brilliant" and "captivating" were the words used to describe St Joan at the 2014 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

St Joan was shown in London, at the Courtyard for two performances, May 7 & 8, 2015, then traveled north to the Dublin Internationall Gay Theatre Festival, May 11–17, 2015, and finally south to Gasometer in Triesen, Liechtenstein, May 21, 2015.

St Joan by British/French author Julia Pascal takes on and takes apart notions like national identity, purity of race and the situation of women as victims and perpetrators of history.

Joan the saint was the symbol of the Left and is now the icon of the french far Right. But would Joan the girl fighter, with the voices of God in her head, really boot out the foreigners of France today?

Three women are Joan, trying to save history from itself. An all-female company explores this hot terrain in a highly physical, darkly funny and entrancing work of theater, delving into the heady themes of National identity, race and women as victims and makers of history.

The play is published by Oberon Books. For more information visit stjoantheplay.com
